Learntyping is a free, structured touch typing tutor built on the classic home-row method. Complete 20 progressive lessons to go from a hunt-and-peck typist to a confident touch typist.
Touch typing means typing without looking at the keyboard. Each finger is assigned specific keys, and by training muscle memory you eventually type at full speed with zero visual effort.
The average hunt-and-peck typist reaches 30–40 WPM. A trained touch typist typically achieves 60–80 WPM, with professionals exceeding 100 WPM. The difference comes entirely from systematic finger-placement practice — exactly what Learntyping provides.
The home row is the middle row of the keyboard: A S D F for the left hand and J K L ; for the right. Your fingers rest here by default and return here after every keystroke.
Feel the small raised bumps on F and J. These are tactile guides that let you re-find the home row without looking down.

| # | Lesson | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Home Row Left / Right | Build the foundation: A S D F and J K L ; |
| 3–4 | Home Row Both Hands / G H | Combine both hands; index finger stretches |
| 5–9 | Top Row (E I → R U → T Y → W O → Q P) | Each finger learns its top-row key one pair at a time |
| 10 | Top Row Complete | All 10 top-row keys together in real words |
| 11–15 | Bottom Row (V M → B N → C , → X . → Z /) | Downward reaches, one pair per lesson |
| 16 | Full Alphabet | Classic pangram — every letter in one sentence |
| 17–18 | Numbers 1–5 / 6–0 | Top number row, left then right |
| 19–20 | Common Words / Speed Challenge | Fluency with everyday vocabulary; push for speed |
WPM (Words Per Minute) uses the industry-standard definition where one "word" = 5 characters. This normalises for short and long words:
Net WPM = (correct characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ elapsed minutes
Only correctly typed characters count toward WPM — errors don't inflate your score.
Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ total keystrokes × 100. Using Backspace to fix a mistake doesn't cancel the error from accuracy, but it also doesn't block you from finishing the lesson.
Aim for 95%+ accuracy before trying to go faster. Speed built on bad habits takes months to un-learn. Accuracy built slowly becomes permanent.
Each lesson takes roughly 15–20 minutes to complete well (including a few retries to hit 90%+ accuracy). Spread over daily 15-minute sessions, most learners finish the course in 3–4 weeks. At 30-minute sessions, you can finish in 10–14 days.
1 lesson per day = done in 3 weeks. 2 lessons per day = done in 10 days. Don't rush — accuracy matters more than speed through the curriculum.

Most people reach functional touch typing (40+ WPM) in 4–8 weeks of daily 15-minute practice. Reaching 60–80 WPM takes 3–6 months. Everyone progresses at their own pace.
No. You need to reach the end of the lesson text. Mistakes are allowed and can be corrected with Backspace. Your WPM and accuracy are recorded but there is no minimum threshold to unlock the next lesson.
Learntyping uses net WPM, which only counts correct characters. Some sites use gross WPM (all characters including errors), which inflates scores. Net WPM is the honest, industry-standard measure.
Lesson 1 is accessible to guests. To track progress, unlock further lessons, and earn a certificate, you need a free account.
The 60-second test presents a random paragraph and measures your WPM and accuracy under time pressure. Unlike lessons, it has no defined curriculum — it's a benchmark of your overall typing ability. Results are saved to your profile.
